How do you tell the NXT that you want one of its pre-defined pictures to appear at a special location on its screen?

You can't. The predefined pictures are just that - predefined. You can't alter the picture, nor can you alter where it appears on the screen.

You do so by selecting "animation" which is found in the "tools" menu and then filling in your desired x and y locations.

You do so by downloading the picture to the NXT, and then using the NXT's touch screen to drag the picture where you want it to go.
